WHAT İS A PERİODİC TABLE?

Well, welcome to the world of chemistry!

The periodic table is a chemistry’s alphabet. It is a table where you can find all of the elements. But what is it that makes this table so special?!

It all started with the time that great Russian scientist, Mendeleyev decided to put all of the elements in order. He was thinking how to do that, and thought why not to sort them from lightest to the heaviest. He used an enormous accuracy while placing each of the elements, so that from their places you could tell the atomic number, if it is

  • a metal,
  • non-metal,
  • semi-metal
  • gas,
  • element’s ionization energy,
  • electronegativity,
  • atomic radius and other things.

He was so smart that he put some parts of the table blanked. No, not for an unusual design, but for undiscovered elements. He placed them so smart that even before those elements were discovered, you could tell everything about them by only looking at the table.

The periodic table is one of the greatest achievements of human history. From the date it was found till now, it is actively used by everyone!

WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF A PERİODİC TABLE?

There are 118 elements in total.  It is obvious that remembering all of them is nearly impossible, so let’s have a look at some of them and get a bit of information about each one.

1.Hydrogen.

The name comes from Greek ‘hydro’ and ‘genes’ which means water forming. It forms three quarters of universe’s mass.

  1. Helium.

The name Helium comes from helios, meaning sun. It was called this way because it was first found in the sun.

  1. Lithium.

It is the lightest metal in the Earth.

  1. Berylium.

It has a wide range of use nowadays, including making of cell phones and aircraft.

  1. Boron.

It is an important element used in nuclear industry.

  1. Carbon.

One of the most unique elements found. Softness or hardness of them depends on the arrangement of the atoms. It is also a must for life on the Earth, as you know.

  1. Nitrogen.

Nitrogen is also one of the essential element for life. It is a component of all proteins.

  1. Oxygen.

It is a colorless gas that helps us to live. Breath in and breath out…

  1. Fluorine.

It comes from Word fluere, meaning flow. It is the most electronegative of all the elements.

  1. Neon.

Neon is the second lightest gas found.

  1. Sodium.

Salt? Well, kind of.. It makes our salt when combined with chlorine

  1. Magnesium.

It is an alkaline earth metal, important for plant and animal nutrition.

  1. Aliminium.

Aliminium is one of the most important elements for industry.

  1. Silicon.

A crucial component of computer chips, one of the most abundant elements in the earth.

Aren’t they interesting? We know they are. If you think it is not enough, keep learning more about them.

HOW TO USE A PERİODİC TABLE?

  • The periodic table is read form left to right.

It is arranged in order of atomic number. An atomic number is how many protons are there is an atom of that element. For example, Aliminium has an atomic number of 13, because one atom of Aliminium has 8 protons in it. The 18 columns, which are called the groups, in a periodic table all share similar chemical properties.

  • Elements in the same period have the same number of atomic orbitals.

  • The elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in outer orbital.
  • The periodic table also shows the Atomic Radius,

which increases moving from top to the bottom and decreases moving left to right,

  • The Ionization Energy,

which increases moving left to right and decreases from top to bottom,

  • Electronegativity, that increases from left to right and decreases from top to bottom.

WHERE CAN YOU FİND A PERİODİC TABLE?

It is not hard to find a periodic table today. It is everywhere: in magazines, journals, classrooms, internet.

Especially, you can find plenty of colorful or white and black periodic tables on Internet. You can google it and find them and tons of information about them or search on YouTube and watch lots of interesting videos.

But if you wish to have one beside your bed to look up every day, you can print free and printable periodic table from websites.
