The Arabic alphabet is the Arabic script as it is codified for writing the Arabic language. Arabic alphabets are written from right to left in a cursive style. The Arabic alphabets include 28 letters. Adaptations of Arabic scripts for other languages include Kurdish, Persian, Ottoman, Urdu, Sindh, Pashto and Malayalam. There are no distinct upper and lower case letterforms. There are two main collating sequences for the Arabic alphabet, the Abjad and Hija. The Arabic alphabet is cursive and varies in shape depending on their position within a word. The letters can exhibit four distinct forms that correspond to a position. Letters in the same word are linked together on both sides by short horizontal lines.
