What is extrinsic motivation?

Extrinsic motivation defines a behaviour which is supported by an external factor. These factors can be money, rewards, praise, appreciation, approval, respect, applause etc. External factors have powerful effects for the people whose motivation is based on external rewards. This type of motivation drive people to continue their actions even it is not satisfactory. The external motivation is the opposite type of the intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation requires inner sense of satisfaction to continue and complete the actions.

How does it work?

People can be motivated by the external motivation; you may work long hours in order to earn money, praise etc. even you don’t want to do that work. Especially you are using this motivation more; it is highly probable that you are a result and award-focused person. If this type of motivation is dominated for one’s behaviours; the act itself does not matter too much because the main important thing is the result of the act. The psychology of this motivation may also contain getting the public approval and appreciation. You can make your child clean her/his room by your praises or a person may study a lot and have a prestigious profession for getting the public respect. Some actors may be addicted to the audience applause and to the fame. Also some people may try to do everything to please others through the motivation of getting love. The use of external motivation can be used effectively in particularly tedious and unwanted works.

The Differences between the Motivation Types

The extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation have significant differences. If you decide what your behaviour motivation is; ask yourself: Why do you do your works? Your answer to this question will be the determinant factor for finding your dominate motivation type. You may also use either of them but generally one type is stronger under your behaviours. If your motivation is external then you:

  • You want to get the results so you can work very hard even you don’t like it
  • Doing something for avoiding criticism
  • You like competitions because you are very enthusiastic to win the award and praise
  • It is very important that other’s respect, approval and you may worry much about what other people think about you.

Intrinsic motivation is clear with these features:

  • The clearest factor under your behaviours is about enjoying! You are doing something because you like them and you care of the sense of satisfactory.
  • You like the difficult activities and works because you want to challenge yourself! You like forcing your own potential.
  • The sense of excitement and satisfaction are the key factors under your behaviours

Is External Motivation good?

Many people can be driven by the external awards but there are some negative points about this type of motivation. External motivation is generally effective due to the sense; “something is missing”; so when people win their awards, they may feel reluctant and insatiable. Using too much extrinsic motivation can push some people to immobility.
